About Tom Rooney

Smiling older man, Tom Rooney, sits in an office with arms crossed at a desk surrounded by books, charts, a coffee mug, and a whiteboard listing financial skills and goals.

Hi, I’m Tom Rooney, founder of Money Habits For Me.

I created this site to make personal finance easier to understand for everyday people who are tired of confusing advice, financial jargon, and unrealistic promises about money.

Over the years, I’ve seen how many people struggle with budgeting, debt, credit, saving, and investing—not because they’re incapable, but because no one ever explained these topics in plain language. Money Habits For Me was created to change that.

I’m a veteran and retired senior executive with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. After a career spent working through complex problems and explaining them in practical terms, I now bring that same approach to personal finance: understand the issue, remove the unnecessary complexity, and focus on steps people can actually use.

My goal is simple: to help you build better money habits through practical guidance you can actually use in everyday life.

Here you’ll find straightforward discussions about budgeting, debt management, credit, saving, investing, and making smarter financial decisions without unnecessary complexity. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s helping you become more informed, more confident, and more in control of your financial future, one step at a time.

I’m also the author of Understanding Money – A Beginner’s Guide to Personal Finance and Financial Terms People Pretend to Understand: How to Follow Money Conversations Without Feeling Left Behind. Both books were written with the same philosophy behind this website: explain financial concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand.

Whether you’re just beginning your financial journey or looking to strengthen the habits you’ve already built, I hope you’ll find resources here that make managing your money feel a little less overwhelming—and a lot more achievable.
